Under the Starlit Sky

A story of human differences and the shared sky vault, based on Native American folk tales

The sky is a mighty thing. Beautiful, big and good. You can find anything under the sky: jogging cactuses, quarrelsome cocks and peace-loving hens, and bears fluttering in the wind. And of course there are stars shining in the sky. But why do they shine like that? It is of course so that we would all be friends. You don’t believe me? Just have a fight with your friend and see for yourself. After the fight, there’s not so much as a star crumb left in the sky; the whole world gets dark. That is what Native Americans believed, so it must be true.

But today, my friends, we celebrate. We put up a tent, light a fire, blow a flute and beat a drum, ride stick horses through the prairie and across the sky vault. We rejoice to have a starlit sky above us. There is no fighting. Or if there is, just a little, we’ll make up immediately. Right?
