These tales were in our collective memory even before they were written down; we have told, depicted, sung, danced and played them for a very, very long time. This is why these tales are not only OLD, but ANCIENT. And each generation of Estonians has interpreted the tales in their own way. A prankster fox has at some point turned into a godfather (of landlords and their friends, as Rein was a name born by Germans at the time).
