{"id":38825,"date":"2025-06-18T15:39:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-18T12:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/2024.eestinoorsooteater.ee\/?p=38825"},"modified":"2025-10-17T15:42:46","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T12:42:46","slug":"baltic-visual-theatre-takes-the-stage-at-the-worlds-leading-puppet-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eestinoorsooteater.ee\/en\/news\/baltic-visual-theatre-takes-the-stage-at-the-worlds-leading-puppet-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Baltic Visual Theatre Takes the Stage at the World\u2019s Leading Puppet Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>This September, the world\u2019s most influential contemporary puppet theatre event \u2014 the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/marionnette.com\/festivals-et-rdv\/fmtm\/festival-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Festival Mondial des Th\u00e9\u00e2tres de Marionnettes<\/a>&nbsp;in Charleville-M\u00e9zi\u00e8res, France \u2014 will spotlight the vibrant and diverse world of Baltic visual theatre as part of its main programme.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A curated selection of performances, exhibitions, lectures, and a spirited club night will bring the artistic voices of&nbsp;<strong>Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania<\/strong>&nbsp;to the heart of the festival, offering audiences a rich encounter with the region\u2019s innovative approach to puppet and object theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<strong>Leino Rei<\/strong>, director of the Estonian Theatre for Young Audiences and one of the key initiators of the Baltic programme, the spotlight is the result of long-term collaboration between visual theatre practitioners across the three countries. \u201cWe reached a shared understanding with puppet theatres in Latvia and Lithuania \u2014 that together we are stronger and more visible. In 2022, we launched a Baltic visual theatre showcase and invited international festival curators to attend. The interest in a Baltic focus has been significant, and alongside Charleville, we are also in discussions with several other festivals around the world,\u201d Rei explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Paulius Tamol\u0117<\/strong>, head of Vilnius Theatre &#8220;L\u0117l\u0117&#8221; and coordinator of the Lithuanian programme, views this opportunity as both a continuation of Baltic cultural cooperation and a chance to amplify the region\u2019s message to a global audience: \u201cThe invitation to present our work at the world\u2019s largest and most renowned puppetry festival inspires us to aim even higher. I believe that this joint journey will strengthen the partnership between Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian theatres, and bring many wonderful new experiences along the way,\u201d Tamol\u0117 notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>M\u0101rti\u0146\u0161 Eihe<\/strong>, General Director of the Latvia Puppet Theatre and main coordinator from the Latvian side, highlights the internal value of the process: \u201cThis festival is much more than just showing up or putting Baltic theatre on display. The entire lead-up has allowed us to explore what\u2019s happening next door \u2013 to notice the overlaps and the contrasts. I hope the festival will give us a chance to step back and see ourselves with fresh eyes, in a global context \u2013 and maybe even inspire some bold new goals for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Baltic Focus programme includes work from both national and independent companies across the three countries. Estonia will be represented by the Estonian Theatre for Young Audiences with&nbsp;<em>Transport: Frontline<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>The Boy and the Butterfly<\/em>. From Latvia, the Latvian Puppet Theatre will present&nbsp;<em>Siberian Haiku<\/em>, while the independent Gertrude Street Theatre will bring&nbsp;<em>Wood Paths<\/em>. Lithuania&#8217;s contribution includes&nbsp;<em>Choice<\/em>&nbsp;by Vilnius Theatre \u201cL\u0117l\u0117\u201d,&nbsp;<em>Transport: Fasten Your Seatbelts!<\/em>&nbsp;by Klaip\u0117da Puppet Theatre, and&nbsp;<em>The Lion and the Bird<\/em>&nbsp;by Kaunas Puppet Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The off-programme adds further dimension with&nbsp;<em>Hearts &amp; Chimneys<\/em>&nbsp;by Kaunas Psilicone Theatre,&nbsp;<em>Disappear<\/em>&nbsp;by Aist\u0117 Marulyt\u0117, and&nbsp;<em>The Fly, the Cockroach and the Spider<\/em>&nbsp;by the Estonian Theatre for Young Audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to performances, the subprogramme includes lectures delving into Baltic visual theatre and three exhibitions that explore shared and contrasting artistic perspectives across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Baltic focus will culminate on&nbsp;<strong>September 23<\/strong>&nbsp;with a joint&nbsp;<strong>Baltic Club Night<\/strong>, where contemporary Baltic musicians reinterpret their national folklore through bold, experimental sound.
