From Word to Object / Dramaturgy workshop

How does a literary text become a wordless visual production? Participants of the workshop will dramatize a literary text in the form of visual theatre – with no words, physically. Together, we look at examples of visual theatre in the history of the Estonian Theatre for Young Audiences and discuss the differences between visual and drama theatre. Instead of puppets, participants learn to animate objects – balls, pillows, polyurethane foam. In groups, they dramatize A. H. Tammsaare’s miniature The Boy and the Butterfly, based on which each group creates a short performance with given objects.

Students who participate in the programme:

  • understand the aim and process of creating dramaturgy;
  • can differentiate between drama and visual theatre, including various types of the latter;
  • translate a literary text into the form of visual theatre;
  • in a group, create an object theatre etude;
  • evaluate their own as well as their classmates’ work.
